Root 64

A river city farm

One acre behind a house on 64th Street. We consciously grow food for our local community, using ecological methods to build and maintain healthy soil.

Farm stand — Saturdays, 9am to noon. April through November, at the farm.

Since August 2017

A neglected backyard, one block deep.

Randy Stannard and Sarah McCamman met while apprenticing at Soil Born Farms, and spent a long time looking around greater Sacramento for a small parcel with a move-in-ready house on it. They found one in Tallac Village — an acre stretching all the way back from 64th Street to 65th. Escrow closed in August 2017. The garlic went in that fall.

Today there are roughly sixty distinct types of herbs and vegetables in the ground, several dozen young fruit trees donated by Soil Born Farms and the Sacramento Kings Foundation, and a straw-bale walk-in cooler they built themselves to keep the harvest cold without a large power bill.

Before Root 64, McCamman ran Heavy Dirt Farm in Davis for six years and built a following selling at the Oak Park Farmers Market. As she put it when the two of them started over on this acre: “It’s the same products, and we have the same stall and I have the same tablecloth. It’s just a different sign.”

In their words

“We’re trying to do stuff as close to us as we can. It’s a mixture of existing relationships and also proximity to the farm.” Randy Stannard, on choosing who Root 64 sells to — Inside Sacramento, August 2018

What comes off the acre

A seasonal array of fresh market vegetables and fruit.

Picked the morning it is sold. What is on the table depends entirely on the week you come.

… and much more, through the season.

How this acre is farmed

No chemical applications.

Ecological methods, to build and maintain healthy soil and to support a vibrant farm ecosystem. This is the whole list — nothing else goes on the ground.

What chefs and neighbors have said

A super-diverse crop plan, hand-delivered.

“It’s a pretty impressive thing. They have a super-diverse crop plan.”

Rebecca Campbell, co-owner, Sac City Brews Neighborhood Tap House — quoted in Inside Sacramento, August 2018. She builds a small menu of seasonal salads almost entirely from Root 64 vegetables.

“The chefs definitely are very supportive. It takes a commitment on their end to want to work with small farmers because it takes a little extra work.”

Randy StannardInside Sacramento, August 2018

“Meet up at Root 64 for a tour of Sacramento’s urban farm, and enjoy some appetizer grazing.”
